Giffen's snappy dialog speeds things along at a brisk pace, and he wisely keeps the humor found in series like Annihilation Conquest: Star-Lord to a minimum. This series doesn't immediately impress as much as Black Adam: The Dark Age, but it doesn't disappoint either. At first glance it seems like a blatant cash-in on the World War III storyline, which was admittedly self-contained by DC's usual standards. As the nation of Biyalia tries to pick up the pieces from Adam's rampage, the Horsemen reassert themselves in a more secretive fashion. The Four Horsemen of Apokolips aren't as dead as they might have seemed following their thrashing by Black Adam. The premise of this mini-series is pretty simple. It makes for better reading than anything Countdown-related, that's for sure. A few months ago I might have questioned the need, but now that 52 has been over long enough for me to miss it I'm glad we have series like this. Throw in a few visits by the madmen of Oolong Island and the evil Dr. Throughout the course of the issue, Giffen finds increasingly inspired ways to introduce the new human incarnations of the Four Horsemen, quoting the pertinent passages of the Book of Revelations each time one the harbinger's of the Apocalypse (or is it Apokolips?) steps onto the stage.Īrtist Pat Olliffe does a fine job providing some clean, if unremarkable, pencil work, and the finished product reads like any worthy, well-crafted adventure starring DC's big three. Giffen gives us all the witty dialogue, dead-on characterization and polished plotline that we've come to expect from the veteran creator, with Supes, Bats and Diana heading to the ravaged country of Bialya to help the relief work that has followed Black Adam's mass genocide of the Bialyan people in World War III. With 52 Aftermath: The Four Horsemen, Giffen gives us the beginnings of a catastrophic world disaster that isn't so much a sequel to the Four Horsemen storyline from 52 as a classic (and well-written) team-up story featuring DC's big three.
